Nationality Criteria for ESE 2027

UPSC allows eligible foreign nationals belonging to the above categories to apply for the Engineering Services Examination, subject to fulfillment of additional conditions prescribed by the Government of India.

Age Relaxation for Government Servants

The upper age limit is relaxable up to 5 years for Government Servants working under eligible Government Departments and Organizations notified by UPSC, provided they satisfy the prescribed conditions.

The relaxation is applicable to candidates applying for the Services/Posts for which they are otherwise eligible and who belong to any of the following categories:

  • Candidates holding a substantive permanent post in the concerned Department or Office.
  • This relaxation is generally not admissible to probationers appointed against a permanent post during the period of probation.
  • However, relaxation is admissible to a probationer if he/she already retains a lien on a permanent post in an eligible Government Department or Office.
  • Candidates who have rendered at least three years of continuous temporary service on a regular basis in the concerned Department or Office before the prescribed cut-off date.

Detailed Age Relaxation Provisions

  • Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories are eligible for age relaxation of up to 5 years.
  • Candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes (OBC-NCL) category are eligible for age relaxation of up to 3 years. OBC status is determined based on the closing date of the application form.
  • Candidates who were ordinarily domiciled in the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 are eligible for age relaxation of up to 5 years.
  • Defence Services personnel disabled in military operations during hostilities with a foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof are eligible for age relaxation of up to 3 years.

Age Relaxation for Ex-Servicemen

Ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers, Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs), and Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs) are eligible for age relaxation up to 5 years, provided they have rendered at least five years of Military Service and satisfy any of the following conditions:

  • Released on completion of assignment, including those whose assignment is due to be completed within one year from the prescribed date.
  • Released otherwise than by dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency.
  • Released on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service.
  • Released due to invalidment from service.

ECOs / SSCOs Age Relaxation

Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs) and Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs) who have completed an initial period of five years of Military Service and whose assignment has been extended beyond five years are eligible for age relaxation up to 5 years.

Such candidates must possess a certificate issued by the Ministry of Defence stating that they can apply for civil employment and will be released on three months' notice upon selection.

Age Relaxation for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)

Candidates belonging to the PwBD category are eligible for age relaxation of up to 10 years.

The relaxation is applicable to candidates suffering from benchmark disabilities recognized under Government of India norms, including:

IETE Qualification

Passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India).

Aeronautical Society of India

Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II & III or Sections A & B of the Aeronautical Society of India.

Institution of Electronics & Radio Engineers

Passed the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London, held after November 1959.

Can Final Year Engineering Students Apply for ESE 2027?

Candidates appearing in the final year or final semester of their Engineering Degree program may apply for the Engineering Services Examination, subject to fulfillment of UPSC requirements regarding proof of qualification.

Important Qualification Criteria:
  • The Commission prepares a list of candidates qualifying for the Main Examination based on minimum qualifying standards in both Paper-I and Paper-II.
  • The number of candidates admitted to the Main Examination is generally about six to seven times the total number of vacancies.
  • The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are considered while determining the final merit ranking.

Negative Marking Scheme

There is a penalty for incorrect answers in the objective-type Preliminary Examination papers.

  • For every incorrect answer, one-third (1/3rd) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted.
  • If a candidate marks more than one answer for a question, it will be treated as an incorrect answer even if one of the marked answers is correct.
  • The same penalty of one-third marks will be applied for multiple answers.
  • No penalty is imposed for unanswered questions.
  • Candidates are advised to attempt questions carefully to avoid negative marking.

Candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks separately in General Studies & Engineering Aptitude (Paper-I) and Engineering Discipline Paper (Paper-II) as determined by UPSC.

Candidates qualifying the Preliminary Examination are shortlisted for the Engineering Services Main Examination. The Main Examination consists of two conventional (descriptive) papers in the candidate's respective engineering discipline and carries a total of 600 marks.
